Food Allergies to look out
My family has as history of allergies and some of my siblings have certain allergies for certain food.I may not be a Food Allegy Expert but i thought it would be great to share with you a few notes on Food allergies especially if you have toddlers or little children.Allergies are inherited but can be prevented …1. Be sure that your child’s teacher(s) is aware of the allergy, even if you have already notified the school by filling in the information on the school entry form. Most Malaysian schools are ignorant of this.
2.Should your child have severe food allergy, there are some things that can be done at the centre or school which seem likely to reduce the risk of problems. However it is important to be aware of the child’s need to have normal experiences at childcare and school, and to be aware of the stress this risk poses for parents, and for teachers and caregivers.
3.When possible children with severe allergies should only eat lunches and snacks that have been prepared at home.
4.There should be no sharing of food, food utensils and food containers. However,be aware that other parents could also be sending highly allergenic food to school (eg. peanuts), and this could be dangerous because young children may still share food.
5.Bottles, other drinks and lunchboxes should be clearly labelled with the name of the child.
6.Simple hygiene such as hand washing and bench-top washing is important.
7.Caregivers or canteen operators who prepare food should know about, and follow careful cleaning practices of surfaces and utensils.
8.Removal of a food from the school (eg from the school canteen) should only be done if recommended, in writing, by a medical specialist. The risk of a life threatening reaction from casual skin contact appears to be very low, although sometimes a child may develop a skin reaction (eg hives).
May the notes above be of use:)
