N C A A And N B A: Interlocked

Several decades ago, the drafting of players by the National Basketball Association was afforded only to those who have already passed and graduated from their collegiate classes. This arrangement was found to be a mutually favorable affiliation between the NBA and universities or colleges. This way, the universities and colleges mainly held only onto players who otherwise went toward the professional basketball league. By the same token, the NBA did not need to fund minor leagues.

However, basketball games in the collegiate levels developed commercialization overtime. This progress made it even more difficult for student athletes to take on their responsibilities as regular students. Particularly, statistics reflected an overwhelming growth in the number of under-educated and poor, yet extremely talented youth basketball players. This finding created an exploitative image for the NCAA and NBA-adopted system.

In an effort to resolve this setback, the American Basketball Association started employing players who have not graduated yet from their college classes. Because of this, a legal conflict ensued up to the Supreme Court of the United States regarding players who were drafted to the NBA. In the legal battle, players insisted their need for the job in professional basketball to support their family. In 1971, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the NBA did not hold an “antitrust exemption” that Major League Baseball did. Thereafter, collegiate players belonging to the economically deprived were permitted early entry unto NBA Drafts. The requirement on hardship was then abolished five years later.

The past three decades marked a noteworthy change in collegiate games. Many American international basketball players skipped college routinely. This group included Kobe Bryant, Kevin Garnett, LeBron James and Tracy McGrady; and Carmelo Anthony who played one year in college basketball. Notably, the annual NBA draft had only selected a few college graduates among its sixty players selected.

There are much fewer high school basketball aspirants that directly progress unto the professional basketball league without at least a year of involvement in college basketball starting in the year 2006. This system cites some maturity concerns following disputes over young players. To be eligible, labor agreements between league owners and basketball players now stipulate for players to turn 19 years old within the draft’s calendar year. Players from the U.S. are required to be a year, at least, when removed from graduation in high school.

Undisputedly, the popularity of college basketball in all states in the U.S. is largely attributed to the huge number of graduates from universities that hold major basketball conferences. College basketball is also kept alive by the NCAA’s advertising of their “March Madness,” which officially is NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship for Division I. Though certain commentators argue that the high turnover of players increases the need for good coaches, numerous teams achieved unprecedented success by putting ample emphasis on “personality” in their recruiting programs. The NCAA organizers have also disclosed their goal to create cohesive groups that play together for four years, which develops higher sophistication, that other teams with less stability are deemed to achieve.

Using Concealed Defense Strategies in Basketball

There is nothing more embarrassing to a basketball coach than to spend an entire game attacking a man-for-man defense – then learn the opponents used a zone. Those coaches who have been in the game for any length of time will probably recall just such an affair. The object of concealing the defense is to confuse the opponents so they will attack with the least appropriate offense.

There are those who may think this should never happen. Possibly it shouldn’t, but it has happened and it will happen even more in the future. The trends in modern basketball defense are revolutionary. The days when you can scout an opponent and prepare for one defense are over. During the heat of a contest and the bedlam of noise created in some gymnasiums, the players are often the least reliable people to determine the opponent’s defense.

If the concealment works for only two or three minutes during some crucial stage of the game, it may well be enough to turn the tide. Close games have been turned into a rout in this manner.

One game was observed where the score was tied 29-29 at the half. The home team had used a man-for-man defense the entire first half. The second half they used a 2-1-2 zone with pressing tactics at mid-court and verbal signals to give the illusion of man-for-man play. The opponents were confused, hesitant, and quite frustrated for about five minutes. That five minutes served its purpose. The final score was 78-50.

If you use concealing tactics and they are successful, don’t let your opponent know what you used when the game is over. There is a great temptation for the coach to exhibit his sagacity. The boys are tempted to tease the opponents a bit about their inability to recognize your defense. Do a good job of conditioning your players so this won’t happen.

Of course, you want to be genial and visit with your opponent after the game. If you do any talking about tactics of the game just played, talk in general terms – don’t give specific information. Throw up a smoke screen. If possible, confuse them even more because you will play them again that year or another year. If you concealed your defense successfully, encourage them to think they attacked your defense in the correct manner.

Here is one of the simpler ways to conceal a defense. Tell your players in the dressing room that any verbal defensive changes you make from the bench are to be ignored. At the first time out when the gymnasium is fairly quiet, yell “zone” or “man-for-man” in a loud voice.

Of course, this would indicate a different defense from the one you are using. One of the opponents will be a real smart boy (if they don’t have at least one smart boy, it won’t work), and he will scurry around warning his teammates of your defensive change of plans.

Their team will then come down the floor prepared to attack the defense you have called. If your boys do a good job of making the defense you are actually using look like the one you have called, the opposition will be confused for at least two or three offensive plays. Those two or three plays might make the difference.

Concealed defenses can become much more elaborate and complex. They have to become more complex in order to be effective over a sustained period of time. They take good planning and hard work. Scouting information is absolutely necessary.

One such plan is the change from one defense to another by floor position of the ball. For instance, if an opponent uses a single post offense, use a zone defense every time a pass is made to one of their forwards. Otherwise- remain in a man-to-man. This means you will be in a man-to-man defense when the ball goes to the pivot or middle area. It means you will be in man-to-man from mid-court and until a pass goes to one of the corner positions.

Employ the method of concealed defense and you may turn the tide of you game. It’s worth a try!

Early Days Of March Madness

John was working in Springfield, Massachusetts at a YMCA training to become an administrator of the YMCA’s program. His challenge was to come up with a game for a gym class that would be physically demanding and could be done inside during the harsh winter months. His solution was to have two teams with 9 players on each team, use a soccer ball and use peach baskets. Basketball was born.

When John Naismith was asked what the team members and their uniforms looked like for the first games of his newly invented basketball, he said the players were young men 23 to 30 year olds with mustaches who wore long trousers and quarter sleeve jerseys with elk sole shoes and knew absolutely nothing about the game.

17 years later, what began as a small invitational in 1908 for high school boys basketball teams sponsored by the Illinois High School Association would grow to a statewide competition with over 900 schools by the late 1930s. In 1939 Henry V. Porter coined this tournament March Madness.

In the same year, the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) held its first tournament with 8 teams: Texas, Oklahoma, Villanova, Brown, Wake Forest, Oregon and Ohio State in Patten Gym on the North western University in Evanston, Illinois.

As a sort of crowd warmer before the first NCAA Championship Game was played between Oregon and Ohio State, the fans were treated to a game from the old days. Two twelve man teams from the North Western
Intramurals all star team tried to put a ball into a peach basket placed at both ends of the court using the rules and conditions of the time when John N. invented basketball in 1891.

This Championship game would be the only NCAA final game John Naismith would get to see as eight months later he would die at the age of 78.

The trophy for the game was placed on a table courtside so all could see it while the game was played. Oregons team beat Ohio State in a close game but not before their captain Bobby Anst would charge after a loose ball unable to stop, knocking the trophy off the table and breaking it into two pieces. During the awards ceremony the commissioner tried to hand it to Oregon with the piece balancing on top but it fell off and they received it in two pieces.

In 1982 CBS Sports Commentator Brent Musburger quoted the NCAA tournament March Madness which would set off a great legal battle between Illinois High School
Association and NCAA. It would later be resolved that both associations would have shared rights to the term.

Today the NCAA Tournaments consists of 65 Mens Teams and the Womens NCAA Tournament consists of 64 Womens teams. The games are played for three weeks usually starting the third Thursday of March and continuing through the first week of April.

Opening rounds for the Mens tournament consists between the 65 and 64th teams. Women do not have these opening rounds since they have only 64 teams. In both Mens and Womens tournaments the first two days will play the 65 teams with winners bringing the teams count to 32. The next two days games will bring the count to the Sweet Sixteen. After which everyone will get a four day break until the next Thursday where the 16 teams will play down to get the Final Four teams in each tournament.

The Mens Final Four teams will play on the Saturday in April and the Womens Final Four will be played on Sunday.The Championship games will be on Monday.

Basketball Basics: How To Dribble

Dribbling is a very important fundamental of both offensive and defensive basketball. Offensively it is used to advance the ball in the back court, to make a drive-in to the basket, and to free oneself from close or congested defensive areas. Defensively, the dribble has become very effective in stalling tactics, especially when a press is being used.

The dribbler may bounce the ball with one or two hands. If he bounces the ball with two hands, he is allowed only one dribble. There is no limit to the number of times he can dribble with one hand.

If a player dribbles, stops his dribbling action, and then dribbles again, he is said to have discontinued his dribble. This is a violation which means loss of ball to the opponent.

Palming is another violation which occurs when a player momentarily stops his dribble by turning his wrist and “cupping” the ball.
Once a player has dribbled and comes to a stop, he must pass the ball or shoot it.

Dribbling can be more of a liability to a team than an asset if not used intelligently. Many players get into the bad habit of bouncing the ball every time they receive a pass. This prevents dribbling by the player who has the ball. He is known to be “dead.” If the player in possession of the ball has not yet dribbled, his guard cannot play him tight because the offensive player can dribble around him. He is known to be “alive.” A “live” player is more of a threat than a “dead” one!

Another dribbling mistake occurs when the dribbler watches the ball. He cannot see what is going on around him. This not only slows down the offense, but prevents the dribbler from knowing when an opponent is approaching or seeing one of his teammates cutting in for a pass close to the basket.

The temptation to dribble is strong. A player must learn when to dribble and when not to. Dribbling in closely guarded areas often results in the loss of the ball, or the dribbler being penalized for “charging.” Charging is running into a defensive player.

Moving the ball down court with passes is faster and more effective than the dribble.

Dribbling is done mostly with the fingers, which are spread, keeping the palm of the hand off the ball. You will notice that the palms of your hand are not used in shooting, passing or dribbling! This enables a player to get that fingertip control which is so important in basketball. The weight of the body is forward and on the balls of the feet. The head is kept up so that the player can see his teammates and opponents. A good dribbler learns to keep his body between the ball and his opponent. This will help protect the ball.

Learn to dribble with both your right and left hand. This will enable you to go in either direction. Being able to move freely in either direction makes it tougher on the defensive man guarding you.

A smart defensive man can stop a player who goes only in one direction. This is also true in shooting and passing. If you are right-handed, use your left hand during your practice sessions. If you are left-handed, use your right hand. In a short time you will be amazed at the skill which results.

Another important aspect of dribbling, especially if you are going at top speed, is knowing how to stop. Many times during a game players are called for taking too many steps after stopping their dribbles. This constitutes a violation and means loss of the ball to the opponents.

In order to come to a quick stop you must crouch slightly, so that your body will have a low center of gravity. Keep your “tail” low, knees bent and one foot in front of the other. The front foot should be flat on the floor and the rear foot slightly raised. Stopping in this manner will enable you to control your body.

This is an important skill in basketball and must be practiced diligently.

Playing and winning a good game of basketball are two different things. You need to have a good team and team players to win the game. You need to be able to pass good and get to the hoop without any problems. This is why you need to work on passing skills so when you are down around the hoop you can pass effectively and get a shot in.

Your team needs to be able to pass the ball and shoot the ball and score. Without a good team you will never get anywhere, you need to be able to be a team and work like a team or you are not going to have a good game when you play. You are not a one man team and you cannot win the game with one person or it wouldn’t be called basketball it would be called Uno ball. So when you are playing a game remember that you have team mates and they will expect you to pass the ball when you are in a pickle and can’t make the shot, they will not expect you to be a ball hog and go for the shot anyways.

Your passing game needs to be up to par or when you pass the other team will steal the ball and run down the court and score all over you. That is why it is important to have team practices and to have passing drills. You pass fast and hard so it makes it hard for the opposing team to make a steal and score on you. So when you are passing remember to pass it hard and in the right direction.

You will just need to have a team that has good passing skills and knows when to pass the ball and not hold onto it. A ball hog can ruin the score and ruin the team as well. Someone that thinks that they don’t need a team doesn’t deserve to be on a team so therefore will get kicked off the team. You knowing who you team mates are and who aren’t will win the game. You passing to the wrong person will cost you the game. That person will be the ball hog and they will miss every shot because they think they are all good and nobody can stop them. So when you are making a team or playing a game of basketball just remember to pass the ball and not hold onto it when you are in trouble.

You will also know how to throw the ball in case it is seconds away from the buzzer ringing and you have a receiver down court and you need to hit him with a football pass to win the game. That is why you need to know how to throw the ball good and right. You will want to hit him in the chest so he can go up and lay the ball up for the winning points.

Why Power Training is Essential to Becoming a Faster Athlete

Maximum power is trained when the athlete works in a range of between 95-100% of their maximum intensity. All too often athletes perform these power training drills at a low intensity thus defeating the purpose of overloading the muscles and maximizing you time spent training. Plyometrics has become the standard for power development with many trainers.

Power is simply the combination of speed and strength. In recent years many athletes and coaches have thought of power training as plyometric training due to the popularity of the term. However, plyometric training is just one form of power training. Plyometric training refers to an athlete developing explosive movements through a concentric contraction (shortening of muscle) following an eccentric contraction (lengthening of muscle).

It is during this eccentric contraction that the maximum force generated by the muscle is attained. The amount of force generated by the muscles following an eccentric contraction is greater. How does this apply to making you faster? Well it is not only specific to the various movements involved in your sport but it allows you to develop a more explosive start which will help you to get to your destination more quickly.

It is the stored energy from an eccentric contraction when a muscle is stretched that is available during the following explosive concentric contraction. It is this stretching of the muscles prior to the explosive muscle contraction that is often referred to as the “loading phase.” The key point here to know is that the greater the load and the faster the load will result in a more powerful contraction.

One key aspect for athletes to know is that the concentric contraction must be immediate after the eccentric contraction otherwise a lot of this energy will be lost. For example if you want to increase your vertical jump you will bend down and then immediately explode upwards. However, you are unlikely to achieve such a height if you bend down, wait a few seconds and then jump upwards. Therefore an athlete must try to jump as soon as they can following the eccentric contraction. This process is often referred to the stretch-shortening cycle and is what plyometrics is built around.

Now transfer this over to how it can make you faster. It could make you faster in getting to a ball if you can time your jump rather than just waiting in a crouched position. It could allow you to be faster if you learn to take off following this phase rather that trying to take off from a crouched position. In tennis you could become faster if you hit the ball, land and recover and then learn to time your explosive start immediately from this position rather than a full upright or fully crouched position.

I found this to be true for the tennis players that I have trained. When waiting in the already crouched position on a return; I found out that they were slower to get off the mark compared to when they were able to time their forward movement. This is where learning the split-step the correct way will make you faster in getting to the ball.

Power training must be specific to the skill or movement that is being performed by the athlete. It is also important that when conducting power training that the load placed upon the body does not affect the actual specific sporting skill or movement. For example; you could where a weighted vest and try to perform a series of vertical jumps but if your specific movement patterns are effected then you are inhibiting the transferring benefit.

This is why when conducting plyometric exercises it is important to choose sport specific exercises with appropriate loading as there will be greater transference across in terms of physiological and learned adaptations.

Key plyometric exercises that help to improve speed include single leg hops, single leg bounding, pistol squats, double leg tuck jumps, double leg hops, alternate leg bounding, incline two leg bounding, zigzag hops or one legged lateral bounding, lateral jumps, squat jumps and split jumps, depth jumps, alternating step ups, double leg jumps and single leg box squats. Additional plyo-metric training method include ladder exercises, stair training, medicine ball exercises, kettle ball exercises, bounding over cones, bounding over mini-hurdles, jump/skipping rope and stadium hops.

One of my favourite exercises is running sand dunes! This is a killer workout and a great way to add extra resistance and variety to your training programs. I guarantee that if you are looking for a fun new way to train your athletes then take them down to the beach where there are some sand dunes. You can also include some sprint sessions along the beach followed by some swimming. Your athletes will be ready to sleep for hours after this work out. It is also fun for them to be outside on the beach. Just be sure to include a proper warm-up and warm-down into your session.

After spending many years with coaches from a variety of sports in developing and designing their fitness and conditioning programs; it was quite apparent that many coaches did not know how to properly implement a plyometric program. The key areas of concern were that many coaches were not completely educated on how to teach and instruct each plyometric exercises. Other factors included the equipment used was of the wrong shape, size and weight for the athlete, the surface that they were performing the exercises on were poor and dangerous, the athletes didn’t understand what they were working on or how it applied to their sport, athletes did not perform a proper warm-up prior to commencing a plyometric program, injuries were not reviewed prior to starting a plyometric training program, plyometrics were used at the wrong time of the season such as introducing new plyometric exercises during the competitive season, a strength base was not established first, some of the athletes were too young for plyometric training and many coaches did not know how many sets and repetitions to use.

Progression of exercises to develop speed include developing vertical drive – conducting plyometric exercises using cones and mini-hurdles will help to develop the vertical drive in athletes. Developing explosive hip power – one of my favorite modes of exercises for developing power, in particular hip power, is stair hops. The key with these exercises is to take away the use of the arms. One way to do this is to place your hands behind your head as you hop with two feet together up the steps. Developing explosive starts – this is where the various bounding exercises assist the athlete in developing speed by improving their explosive starts. Two of my favourite exercises are the single-leg and double-leg bounding followed by an immediate sprint. These exercises assist the athlete in pushing off the ground followed by a subsequent burst of speed over 10 metres.

Three main points in order to gain positive results from plyometric training are to develop a sound base of flexibility, develop a sound base of strength and to reduce the risk of injury by performing the proper technique for each exercise.

The following need to be identified and considered prior to an athlete commencing a plyometric training program: Age of the athlete, current or potential injuries, medical history, muscle imbalances, current strength of athlete, current speed of athlete, the athlete’s weight, the athlete’s experience and knowledge with power training and the surface that the exercises will be performed on.

The key variables that need to be considered with plyometric training include frequency of sessions, rest and recovery between sessions, overload, progression with intensity levels, progression with volume, what season the athlete is in (pre or post season), duration of the program or session, the specific demands of the sport, implementation of a thorough warm-up and your tournament schedule.

The following is how developing power can improve an athlete’s speed in a chosen sport such as tennis. The development of power in the game of tennis is most important to players at the higher levels. It is important to understand both components of power, which are the strength and speed aspects and how each relates to power development.

Power is also involved in all strokes and areas of the game of tennis. Power is particularly important in the explosive movement during the service motion, thus adding more “speed” to the serve. A faster serve will obviously be more effective and can help the player to develop the serve into a weapon.

Power is also extremely important to developing speed as it contributes to improved explosive starts and speed over short distances. Power development is one of the most neglected areas when training tennis players due to the lack of knowledge and understanding by coaches in how to train for “power.”

Include power drills that involve the use of some equipment such as a medicine ball, as well as some drills using ones’ own body weight for those programs that do not have access to the required equipment.

Injury Concerns with power training – It is extremely important to demonstrate proper technique in all power drills in order to prevent injuries. The development of power involves many “explosive” or “ballistic” movements and if performed incorrectly can often lead to injury. It is therefore important for the coach to fully understand how to demonstrate the skill, what they are trying to achieve, each player’s physical ability, and how to include power training into their fitness and conditioning programs. It is important, as with all fitness drills, that the coach follows any specific directions given by a player’s physician.

Power development is primarily directed towards the more advanced competitive athletes. When coaching younger athletes still in the developmental stages (both technically and physically) it is more important to use the time available to develop stroke technique, court positioning, scoring, and overall understanding of the game of tennis.

Power training needs to be specific to the movement involved. All of the major power movements have been identified and the following drills have been developed specifically for power development in tennis players.

Be sure to complete a needs analysis for each athlete identifying any possible injuries of concern. To minimize the risk of injury, it is important to conduct an aerobic warm-up and extensive stretching routine prior to performing these power training drills. Weights are used not only to develop absolute strength, but also strength-speed.

The simple jump exercises (such as single leg hops, two feet bounding, jumps for height or distance) are useful in developing the eccentric component of the forced stretch – contract phase. Perform these simple jump exercises prior to starting the more advanced exercises.

The training sessions should be progressive with each phase developing the player’s body sufficiently so that they can move onto the next phase of training. The ultimate goal is to be peaking for their competitive phase, so be sure to prevent stagnation by understanding what phase of training they are in. Include a variety of drills.

If you wish to increase you speed then you will need to incorporate some form of power training into your sessions. Speed is often defined over short distances and this is where you need that powerful and explosive acceleration to help make you faster.

How Basketball Is Played And The Rules You Must Follow

There were many sports made but only one was made by DR. James Naismith a Canadian physical instructor. The game was made and started playing back in the day. Soon it would become a game that would be played all over the world and would be a sport that someday people would be getting paid to play that is how popular it would come to be.

The team with the ball has to try and score on the other team by getting the ball in the opponent’s hoop. Once your team has scored the ball is then given to the other team to give them a try to get a hoop. If they do not make a hoop then the other team can try and get the rebound of the missed shot and then can either run down court for a lay up or take a shot for more points. The point of the game is you would have nine players on each team. Only a few of those would play on the court at a time but basketball would soon become a popular sport.

In the 1950s the ball was changed from a soccer ball to a bright orange so the announcers could see the ball to talk on the radio and so the people in the stands could see the ball as well and know what was going on. If you had that same soccer ball today and you went to a NBA game you wouldn’t know where the ball was because they are so small and hard to see as it is.

There are I think three different versions of basketball if I am not wrong there may be four. There is the NBA which the goal I think for the three points is either 28 feet away or 30 feet. Where as for college it is 22 feet away from the goal for a three pointer and the goal is shorter I believe then you have the WNBA. Which I know nothing about but I know for a fact that there courts are smaller and there goals are shorter as well. Even though the girls are girls they still have smaller courts and shorter goals even when you have a 6’8″ black girl that will goal tend anything you shoot.

There are breaks in between each quarter but they are mostly unused just because sometimes they need to get the games speeding up. There is a halftime after the first two quarters. That is when they will switch goals and each team will be guarding the goals that they were trying to score on.

Basketball is not only a fun sport but it is also a sport that will help keep you in great shape so get out there and start playing some roundball.

Solutions To Basketball Problems

How should a shooter take cover after his or her long shot? Is it really safe to loosen up on defense after losing possession of the basketball? These are just a few of the challenging situations that put most novice basketball players in a quandary. Even the best players fall into the trap of getting lost in a situation during the game.

According to basketball experts, it is significant for coaches and players to thoroughly understand “basketball problems” which are expected to indiscriminately arise in all basketball seasons, for them to know what solutions to take.

After taking a long shot, a shooter must not turn his or her head to follow the ball’s flight. Thereafter, a quarter-turn must be made. The opposing player should work in toward the basketball ring along with the shooter while keeping him or herself between the basket and the shooter.

After losing hold of the ball, it is never safe to relax. Using the fast break strategy will not allow the team to keep the game. Instead, the defense team should go back to defensive position after the ball has changed to different hands. While waiting for offense, grab the opportunity to relax. Basketball specialists say that this, in fact, is the only time within the game to “rest.” It is a no-no to relax while moving around the basketball court.

It is a risky habit to bat or slap a ball that bounds off the basket of the defense side. Truth is this may cause a player to lose a game, because the ball can possibly deflect into the hands of an opponent. This can afford him or her some quick shots and a fairly easy two points.

Any specific foul shot type is not recommended, but the most comfortable style of shooting is encouraged. When a player finds that a type of strategy in shooting proves successful, a player should stick to that style and not use other types of shot.

When two men of the offensive team are coming down the floor, a defense player must stay at the floor’s center part between these two men. When possible, try feinting toward the direction of a player, and at the same time keeping the other one guarded. The middle of the court should not be left at all times. Hands should be kept up while gradually retreating. Indeed, this is a challenging and tricky situation, but a player must always keep this in mind: whenever shots are taken, a player should make the shooter shoot the ball from the outside and never allow any opportunity for lay-up shots!

During half-tune intermissions, managers are advised to chart and keep track of the shots that are taken by both teams. The score book crafts a clear picture of what took place in the game’s first half. This shooting chart also reveals where the opposing teams are hitting, while in the process enabling the team to strategize on necessary adjustments on their defensive game play. Besides informing players of their committed personal fouls, the committed fouls by the other team should also be discussed. Similarly, managers and coaches should track the points scored by each opponent player. The players are also told regarding the time-outs consumed by the team by far. The intermissions should be an opportunity to make suggestions to impede the leading scorer from the other side. The team should then talk about their offensive and defensive strategies, and make the needed “fine-tuning” to these.

Why Nellie Ball and the Warriors are the NBA’s Finest

Can you imagine coaching Kobe Bryant: Are you healthy? Are you rested? Wanna play? That’s it. For the rest of the players it’s ‘feed K the ball’.

The problem is with salary caps you can’t give all your money to K because that means the other guys won’t get paid very much and it might be hard to attract players that can do things like catch the ball. But there is another way; another strategy.

It’s called Nellie ball. Who can forget last spring when the Warriors blew out Dirk and the Mavs? Blow out time! The team and execution coach Don Nelson put on the floor stunned the basketball world and especially delighted the jaded Warriors fans. Of course if you remember, Don had done it before with the Warriors.

Understanding the coach is the team’s foundation, GM Chris Mullen knew that Don was the man. During the off season the biggest anxiety was Nellie’s return. Without Nellie there is no Nellie Ball. What a relief when they broke the news that the Warriors would be back with Nellie.

And this year is a bit different from last. Nellie could pick his own players and from what it appears Mullen did nothing to interfere. Think of what this means. Few people know basketball like ex-NBA star Chris Mullen yet Chris says Don is the Man. That takes guts and smarts and points for Chris who is in the running with Danny Ainge of the Celtics as the NBA’s best GM. Ainge is betting on the superstars; Mullin on Nellie and the Team.

The season opening went flat, partly because catalyst Stephen Jackson was serving out a suspension. It was one loss after another and not a good start. But with Jackson back in the line up the combination was ready to roll again and as they did in Oakland by crushing Shaq and Company in the fourth quarter.

Here they go again was what it looked like in that fourth quarter and you could hear the buzz in the crowd. When they get into their zone the Warriors are capable of putting together strings of runs and demolish opponents.

So what does Nellie do that other coaches don’t?

First I remember seeing him play with the Celtics when I was a kid. I always felt players should make the best coaches because players know the game the best. Nellie knows the game and the inside report is that he is a stickler for the fundamentals, which comes directly from being a player.

Also Nellie can look a player in the eye and see if they really want to play. Nellie fills his team with players like that. They come cheaper than Kobe but can be highly productive. They seem to have quirky characters and personalities like Stephen Jackson and Baron Davis. But they come together under Nellie. Boy do they ever.

Mark my words…Nellie is getting ready to pull the big one. His boys are fast, quick, determined and good. They work like a team and play defense like it’s half the game. Last night they were down 18 to Dwayne and Shaq and blew them out in the fourth quarter. A couple years back the Heat were champions. Go figure.

The Warriors all scrap and shoot good free throws. They all seem to have a good work ethic and love to play. When they get moving they can steal the ball in so many ways and score in so many ways. If they stay hot with the threes they could be unbeatable.

Unbeatable? Spurs and Celtics? You bet. The team model for the Spurs and Celts is superstars with supporting cast. If one of the superstars gets hurt, a big cog in the wheel goes down. If a Warrior gets hurt, odds are his replacement will be just as good. A solid bench pays off all season and especially during the playoffs. Please spread the money, honey.

What me worry? Nobody worries as much as Nellie. To see him work the sidelines you would think he was getting ready to have a Miminsky and he always is on the verge. If Nellie expects his players’ best efforts he is no less demanding of himself. The worry edge goes to Nellie.

Will the recipe work? There are no guarantees in life and even fewer in professional sports. But one thing is for sure, Nellie Ball is here and it is going to stay here and this just might be the year. After all, what does that smarty Chris Mullin know that the rest of us don’t?
