Improve Your Child’s Eating

As a child, I vividly remember my mother telling me that I must stay at the table until I finished my plate of hamburger casserole. I ate enough to satisfy my hunger even though I disliked the food, because I was hungry. However, the combining factors of disliking the food and not being hungry anymore made it a seemingly impossible task to finish my plate. The portion was too big, and I didn’t need that much food. I didn’t know how to explain this to my mother, so I responded by smashing the food, hiding it under my potatoes, and sneaking some of it under the table to the dog. I felt bad that my mother was frustrated with me, but I just couldn’t finish it.

Sound familiar? If you are like most parents, you are concerned with what and how your children eat. Whether you’re worried about your child’s weight, appetite, or food preferences, you’re not alone. Rather than focusing on the problem with your child, it may be helpful to focus on yourself’what behaviors you are doing that may be impacting your child’s eating.

All children have a desire to eat. If your child isn’t eating, eats too much, or refuses to eat food with the essential nutrients they need, it probably has less to do with their desire or ability to eat, and more to do with your feeding relationship with your child. What you need is to evaluate the division of responsibility of your child’s eating.

Ellyn Satter, a notable dietitian, has studied and written extensively on maintaining a division of responsibility essential to a child’s successful eating, and a parent’s successful feeding. In Secrets of Feeding a Healthy Family, she explains it as an understanding of the role that both you and your child play in your child’s eating. This includes the child’s habits and nutritional needs, the kinds of food provided to the child, and the expectations that parent and child have for each other. Parents who are too controlling or casual, however well-intentioned their actions may be, can inadvertently undermine an otherwise successful feeding relationship with their children.

Understand that you are responsible for what food is provided to your child, when it is provided, and where it is provided; contrary to many parents’ beliefs, your responsibility ends there. Your child-not you-is responsible for how much he eats, and for deciding whether he eats at all.

Parents must provide a balance of love and limits for their children in order to best encourage proper eating habits. Have realistic and developmentally appropriate expectations for your child’s behavior, and for the food they eat. According to Satter, it can take a child an average of 10-20 tastes before he begins to like a food. If you give up too easily, you could limit your child or deprive him of his right to learn how to appreciate new foods. Give your child options of several foods at once, and let him choose what and how much he will eat.

Children are incredibly good at naturally regulating their diet, and getting the nutrients they need. Encouraging them and allow them to choose without forcing them. This creates the right environment for your child to eat, try new things, and develop a taste for nutritious foods. Healthy snacks provided at appropriate times will also help balance your child’s eating patterns.

Instead of being forced to stay at the table until I finished it, my mother could have understood the division of responsibility and allowed me to eat the portion of food that I knew was right for me. Of course, if I had come back twenty minutes later asking for a snack because I was hungry, then my mother could provide appropriate choices and limits for me. Having an understanding of her role as the provider of the food, and my role as the eater, could have helped us both avoid a lot of frustration and upset stomachs.

The bottom line is to allow your child to take control of his own eating, after you have provided appropriate choices and limits. This will encourage good eating habits, and help him become more like a grown-up in what and how he eats. Your child notices your behaviors and attitudes toward food, and is apt to adopt them himself. Make family mealtimes a positive experience for your child, and he will likely make them a positive experience for you.

Why Use Worksheets: How We Develop And Learn

As children grow up and interact with other children and other adults they learn problem solving skills, critical thinking skills, and language skills.

This is the learning process simplified: Attention makes us receptive to information, which we process together with prior knowledge, until we arrive at conclusions and understanding, which we then apply and test for confirmation. (How do people learn, Don Elkington)

We start off by looking around and noticing things, paying attention to our our surroundings and by paying attention we are receptive to information. Using prior experience and prior knowledge we reach conclusions. By processing all of this together we develop understaning.

In teaching we need to use these 5 processes to help children learn.

Attention – We need to get the child’s attention before we start so that they are receptive to the information we are going to give them. We need to explain why the information is important to them and why it would be a good thing for them to learn this. We need to get the children excited about learning.

Information – Everyone learns in different way so we need to be able to teach in different ways too. We need to present our information in different formats so we cater for all the learning methods; written words, visuals, audio, live action, practice etc.

Prior Experience – It is quite natural to compare what we are doing/learning with other ways we have learnt in the past. Discussions about why one way is better than another way and talking about how different ideas work for different things will help us understand.

Conclusion and Understanding – We need to help the children come to their own conclusions about what has been learnt and work throught the stages they went through to come to this conclusion.

We have to remember that children have a short attention span so we need to get them involved in the learning process as much as possible to keep their minds engaged. It is also a good idea to check how much they have learnt by giving them exercises to complete on their own or with family at home to see check their knowledge and level of understanding.

A worksheet is a piece of paper, designed to help organize material for learning or clear understanding used by teachers to review what has been taught in class. Worksheets are meant to provide extra skills practice using problems to solve and fill in the blanks in the crosswords and puzzles to make learning more fun. Worksheets exist in many different subjects and give students as much practise as possible both in class and at home. Parents often download worksheets from the internet to help their children and give them some extra practise.

Worksheets are organised by key stage and subject so it is easy to find something that will be at the right level for your child. Many websites offer a wide range of downloadable worksheets to meet your child’s needs.

Learn Science, Learn to Build Robots!

Invention has been a part and parcel of human beings ever since they have come into existence. From the invention of fire, to that of the wheel, invention has been an ongoing process that has been going on and will continue in the future as well.

Everything that we use today was invented or developed by someone at some point of time in history. All this is because of man’s incessant thirst for newer things which drives the wheels of invention.

It is a well known fact that a child’s mind is very fertile and is highly creative and imaginative in nature. Thus, this creativity should be channelized in a single direction such as painting, singing, or any other creative activity which brings out the creative self in the child.

For instance, some children like to draw, so they should be encouraged to draw even if their drawing is not that good. The point is that children should be encouraged and inspired to do what they like to do, so that it brings out the artist or inventor inside them.

For most children, the earliest passion is toys of all kinds: dogs, action heroes, cars, dolls, teddy bears, airplanes, designing toys and what not. Some of these toys walk, some talk, some dance, while others run or fly. The earliest question arising in a child with a curious mind is that how do these lifeless toys dance or sing or walk for that matter.

The kids with an inventive bent of mind always try to make different things with different materials. Many want to build toys that they play with, but don’t have the requisite materials for that purpose. For those kids interested in cars and robots, nothing is better than the LEGO mind storms kit, which has hundreds of plastic and metals parts, which can be joined to create a plethora of robots and other toys.

However, all toys before taking shape physically have to chalked out in the mind or on the design board, that is a prototype of the toy. A prototype is a small model of the toy/robot that has to be made beforehand as the modern toys are highly complex requiring different materials and parts.

The prototype is the starting point for testing and improving the design. Knowing how things work, putting it all together, and getting the toy to act like the real thing means being a bit of an engineer.

This is because the toy requires different parts to be put together as the original thing, add to it the circuits and programmed chips required for the toy to behave just as the original one. However, at the end of all this, nothing beats the joy at looking at your toy/robot spring to life because eat the end of the day it’s your own hard work and imagination.

So anyone and everyone having a creative and scientific bent of mind should give a shot at making robots as they not only fun to make with your friends but also gives some insight into how things work.

Deciding Where To Send Your Child To School

Choosing where to send your child to school is probably one of the most important decisions you will ever make. Do you send your kids to the local public school or do you think that they will get a better education if you pay for it? Maybe your child has special needs or some kind of learning disability, be it physical or mental which means that they may benefit from going to a special school? Or maybe they will actually learn better if they attend a mainstream school?

The majority of parents choose to send their children to a public school. Public schools are funded by tax payer’s money and provide a good level of basic education for most children. There is often a public school close by, or at least easily accessible by public transport. Some public schools take children based on their catchment area (how close the child lives to the school) and others ask them to sit an entrance exam. Some schools are single sex but the majority are mixed.

Schools that do not receive any funding from government sources are considered private schools. Fees range from around 5000 pounds up to a staggering 30,000 pounds a year and it is required that all pupils sit an entrance exam. Some private schools may receive funding from affiliated organisations such as a church. Parents may choose to send their children to a private school as some believe that their children will get a better education, that the school might be more disciplined or more challenging or they want their child to go to a single sex school.

Alternative schools such as Steiner schools are privately funded school with a slightly different ethos. Although they do follow the GCSE syllabus, they also have their own curriculum founded on Steiner’s principles that take account of the whole child giving equal attention to the physical, emotional, intellectual, cultural and spiritual needs of each pupil and is designed to work in harmony with the different phases of the child’s development.

Many parents choose to send their children to a Steiner school as they feel that the regular curriculum is too narrow and they want their children to follow a more holistic approach. Classes are all mixed and have children from all faiths and backgrounds.

More and more parents are now choosing to homeschool (or home educate) their children. This may be for religious reasons or due to their child being bullied at mainstream school or protecting them from negative influences such as drugs or gangs, they may think that they can give their children a better education themselves or sometimes they may find that homeschooling is the only realistic option many families live in remote areas and it is not easy to get their children to school every day.

Special schools are schools that provide special educational provisions for pupils with special educational needs (SEN) whose needs cannot be fully met in a mainstream school. All children learn in different ways and some need lessons tailored especially to them. Children who have autism or dyslexia for example sometimes find mainstream school too confusing and need more help that a teacher in a mainstream school can give them. Special school are not always the right option but sometime a child can learn much better this way.

Wherever you decide to send your child to school the main issue is that they are happy and challenged and that they learn in a way that suits them.

Prevent Your Obese Child Becoming an Obese Adult

There is an ‘epidemic’ sweeping the western world and affecting millions of children every year and the governments have yet to produce an inoculation that will eradicate it in the near future. This terrible disease that allegedly affects almost 60 per cent of American children and remains without a miracle cure is called “childhood obesity”.

You will have heard the words said many times on their own but recently they were put together to create a terrifying phrase that puts the fear of God into parents around the world. Mothers and fathers across the globe have been scratching their heads to prevent this happening to their own child.

So, what can we do about it and when can we start? Studies have revealed that around 40 per cent of obese children become obese adults so the problem must be stopped before it starts. How and why does a child go from a chubby baby to a fat kid and is it as simple a problem to solve as it appears?

Children will gain weight, in the same way as adults, for two main reasons.
1. Lack of exercise and physical activities.
2. Unhealthy and excessive eating.

Parents must take responsibility for their own child and this includes weight gain. The child will eat what they are given and will play sports or exercise when the opportunity is presented. Up until a certain age, children are powerless to buy their own meals and so the parents will be offering the treats and snacks, whether they are requested or not.

It can be difficult to refuse your child a treat but this should not be seen as an excuse to consistently grab one whenever you want a moment of peace. Indulge in activities with your child, they will thank you for it in the short-term and the long-term.

However, parents will claim that it isn’t as easy as that. Food is more readily available and cheaper (despite the increase in cost of living) than ever before, and with fast food outlets in every town and village it is so much easier for kids to spend pocket money on chips and sweets.

So, in a society where being thin is the target of millions of teenage girls how did we reach this point? Every week on TV we hear stories about teenagers starving themselves to look thinner and emulate pop-stars and public outcry for Victoria Beckham to put on weight to set a good example.

In the same magazines that publish these pictures of waif-like models alongside offensive headlines you will find photos of regular-size celebrities with captions of ‘fat’ and ‘porky’. It is evident that the media encourages a poor body image in the youth of today and with such contradictory messages it is little wonder that such a high-level of children are overweight or unhealthy eaters.

But the parent must not shun responsibility and adopt the attitude that it is pop-culture that encourages bad habits. The effects of childhood obesity are massive and should sound out a warning cry to parents around the world. Type II Diabetes, breathing trouble, high cholesterol and heart problems are just a few of the illnesses that could be brought on by over-indulging at an early age.

If parents don’t step up and take responsibility for their children’s futures, they will only regret it when the damage is done. It really is a simple process of promoting a healthy eating program and encouraging regular exercise, so there really is no excuse.

Kids Face Painting – Every Parent Should Know How To Do It

All parents should learn how to do kids face painting. Why? Because every child loves to get their face painted.

Let me prove my point.

What comes to mind when you think of summer? I can hear you saying carnivals, fairs, parades, fireworks, barbecues, swimming pools, and all kinds of sports to name a few. Kids love all of these events but which is their most favorite activity? That may be hard to answer but if you throw in face painting then it doesn’t matter what the activity is or the location–kids will love it!

What is the most popular booth or activity at a carnival or fair? Well, in my experience the kids face painting booth always has a line. I ran the kids face painting booth during one summer event and it was the only booth that was busy non-stop for the entire event. It seemed like every child came at least once and many came back several times. Kids love many activities but when you add face painting in the mix, you can’t go wrong.

Do you see now why every parent needs to learn this one thing? Of course you do, but let me add that you can brighten any kids day by painting a sun with sunglasses, or a football, or a cool insect on their face.

Why do kids and even adults love face painting? Because we all like to feel important. For a small moment in time, kids get to share their face painting with siblings and friends and every other random person that walks by. They become the center of attention–right where they want to be. Who doesn’t want to be noticed and admired for a brief moment in time.

Although very popular to do in the summer, face painting can be done any time of year. During cold and rainy days, you can paint cool designs on your kids’ faces to brighten their day. Try it sometime with your kids and even invite their friends over for a face painting party. I bet the neighborhood kids will be talking about it for weeks.

Face painting is easy to learn. Just do a search for kids face painting designs or face painting techniques and you’ll find all the help that you need to get started. There are a lot of good resources online about this subject and most are free. In fact, go get started right now and brighten up a kids day!

Getting to Know Babies and Toddlers

Having a baby is the start of a most wonderful journey in a person’s life. Babies bring with them the pleasures of watching a new individual grow and develop, the love that comes with concern and the awareness that someone needs you for everything.

A toddler’s world grows rapidly between one to three years of age. This is a period of change for toddlers. The most crucial learning for children is that they are independent, separate people in these years.

It is important for babies to learn from their parents in the first few months that their world is secure and that there are people who will always look after them. They will know this only when their requirements of comfort, love, food and warmth are satisfied.

Parents need to play and cuddle with their babies when they are awake and alert. They need to hold and stroke them. It is necessary for parents to feed them whenever required, keep them warm, comfortable and clean.

It is necessary for a baby to learn that it is able to do things by itself such as making noise while shaking a rattle. Make it a point to talk to babies regarding what you are doing as you wash, change and feed it.

Toddlers on the other hand need:

1. Time to explore
2. Encouragement
3. Your patience
4. Comfort to be able to check out their freedom
5. To be allowed to choose according to their likes

Never force toddlers to be good. Only if they get your affection, love and approval will they be prepared to accept limits. Do not expect them to consider their daily routine work. Only daily practicing can enable them to remember.

Choosing Appropriate Toys:

Keep the following tips in mind while selecting toys for babies and toddlers:

1. Keep them simple:

Avoid purchasing toys, which do not allow babies and toddlers to use their own imagination. Stuffed animals and dolls, which sing, talk or direct children to press specific buttons generally, take charge of the situation when the child has to direct an action.

When a toy is very specific, it denies babies and toddlers to use their own imagination. The best toys are simple ones such as blocks since they enable children to be spontaneous and creative.

2. Set limits on electronic toys:

According to research, electronic toys result in many dangers for a child’s development and health including weight gain, hearing loss and developmental and language delays. It is thus, necessary to set limits on the purchase of electronic toys.

In addition, electronic toys interfere with a child’s learning to think independently since they endorse a passive learning style.

Nutrition For Babies And Toddlers:

It is never too early to create a foundation of healthy eating habits and good nutrition for babies and toddlers. They need sufficient number of calories and energy to fuel their play activities and various growth stages and there is no need for large portions.

Large portions overwhelm their appetites and are very big for their stomachs. Servings have to be quarter the size of a large portion. Make mealtime enjoyable and pleasant for children. The following are a few tips:

1. Plan a silent time before snacks and meals. Babies and toddlers eat properly if they are relaxed.
2. Respect the food preferences of babies and toddlers.
3. Offer food, which appeal to toddlers. They usually prefer unmixed, plain foods and finger foods, which make eating easier.
4. Offer a variety of nutritious foods.
5. When toddlers refuse to have more food, they mean it. Do not force them.

Play Yards Are Great For Your Family

In this fast-paced world, we sometimes find it hard to drag ourselves away from work to spend time with our children. Play pens are a fantastic way of taking a baby to work with us, giving the baby a warm and inviting place to play while we do the activities that help make our lives possible. Let’s detail some other ways beyond a travel play yard to spend more time with our kids. In this article we’ll discuss a number of those choices, hopefully giving you various thoughts about how to allocate more quality time with your kid.

As mentioned before, play pens are excellent ways to keep our kids close to us throughout the work day. Of course most folks would much rather drop off a baby with a babysitter or in day care so that your child doesn’t disturb everyone at your workplace. But of course, we all realize that many times life doesn’t always work out as well as we’d like it to. If we’re brought back to our workplace at the last minute, it’s relieving to be able to provide our kid with a safe place to sleep while we watch our baby. If you’re in this bind, you might consider buying a travel play pen that easily slides into your vehicle for ease of use. Play pens come in a variety of styles and flavors, so make sure you purchase a play yard that gives your kid enough freedom to play, and lets you travel easily.

Another way to bring your kid on a hectic work schedule (besides a play pen), is to take your baby along as you work out. The most effective way to bring a child as you exercise is a jogger stroller. These have become very popular in recent years, and let you stay in shape while also keeping an eye on your infant. Jogging strollers must, however, be constructed to rugged tolerances in order to keep your baby safe while you jog. Many jogging strollers have large and more robust wheels, which help reduce the shock of rolling over bumps and rough parts of the road as you do your routine. You should of course make sure that you remain on paved surfaces for a softer ride for your young one. To keep your baby from coming loose in his or her seat, jogger strollers, much like play yards, usually include a nylon netting to keep your young one warm and safe during your workout.

Hopefully this article has given you, the reader a few ideas on how to incorporate play yards and other things into your life to allow you more quality time with your family.

Help Your Child Develop Healthy Habits

A childhood obesity epidemic is sweeping across the country. One in three children ages 6-19 is overweight, a number that has doubled in the last decade, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Being overweight is one thing children should be warned about early. Overweight adolescents have a 70 percent chance of becoming overweight or obese adults, the surgeon general’s office says.

Obesity has serious health and social implications. Health problems include: asthma, type 2 diabetes, certain types of cancers, high blood pressure, increased stress on bones and cartilage, sleep apnea, low self-esteem and depression. Sound scary? That’s not all. Social consequences include bullying, discrimination, harassment, isolation and violence.

The cure for this epidemic is readily at hand: eat more wisely and exercise more regularly. We need to make sure our children are being physically active for a minimum of one hour each day. A lot of them aren’t getting their exercise at school. According to the CDC, high school physical education classes have dropped to 32 percent nationwide.

And now that schools out, the risk is high that millions of children will spend a lot of their time lying around the house watching television or playing on the computer while eating chips and sweetened cereals.

One solution is to put your child in a martial arts program. The martial arts promote a healthy lifestyle, are great exercise, and they keep kids busy with a positive activity.

As a parent, you have the greatest impact on your child’s health by the choices you make every day. Here are some things you can do.

Make your house a sugar-free zone and substitute potato chips with grapes and other fresh fruits. Also, switch from soda to milk or water.

Turn off the television during meals. Take a walk together after meals a couple of times a week. Reward your kids for mowing the lawn, or washing the car or walking the dog.

A big plus would be to enroll your child in a good martial arts program. Along with exercise, karate develops self-discipline and self-control which will help them make the right decisions and choices.

Model the positive behavior for your children and it will become a normal part of their lives at home. Then when they are on their own and face unhealthy food, exercise and life choices, they will know how to resist.

Summer is the perfect time to start a healthy and active lifestyle for yourself and your entire family.
When school starts, your kids can answer the question about what they did over the summer with three simple words: We got healthy.

Steven Doss developed healthy habits as a child from the martial arts, and forty years later, has passed on to thousands of children these same lessons of Self discipline, Respect, and Self-defense. See what your child has to look forward to at http://www.pmaaustin.com.

Breastfeeding Diet – Some Dos And Donts That Make A Difference

Breastfeeding is a very special phase of life after pregnancy not just for you but for your baby as well. What you do and what you eat are important for your baby’s wellbeing and development. Therefore, there are several dos and donts that you need to follow regarding a breastfeeding diet. Let me give you a brief insight into the same. However, you must make sure that you consult your lactation consultant or health care professional before making any significant changes in your diet or lifestyle because you can’t take chances with your health during this period.

Dos
*You should focus on vitamin intake, which can be achieved only through a well balanced diet. Include fruits and vegetables in your diet – they are the best source for all kinds of necessary vitamins. Every day, make it a habit to eat five portions of fruits and vegetables.
*For vitamin C and A, you can include broccoli in your breastfeeding diet.
*If it is winter, a sun bath is a fantastic idea, as it is a great source of vitamin D. However, if it is summer, you obviously cannot go in for a sun bath, so you will have to consider taking Vitamin D through your diet. You can do this effectively by adding ample quantities of oily fish, margarine and dairy products in your diet.
*Minerals are also important during the breastfeeding days. It is important for the mother to get her RDA of minerals such as Selenium, Zinc and Calcium.
*For calcium, you can have milk and related dairy products. Other good sources for calcium may include tahini, spinach, almonds, white bread, tofu, dried figs, calcium enriched soya milk, and sardines.
*In order to fulfill the needs of zinc in your breastfeeding diet, you can rely on certain products such as fish like mackerel and prawns, hard cheese, lentils, whole meal bread, cashew nuts, baked potatoes, sardines, and red meat.

Donts
*No alcohol at all. Alcohol intake at this stage may result in the passage of alcohol to your milk. The quantity of alcohol will obviously be very low in milk, but it is extremely harmful for your little one. Your baby needs milk, not alcohol.
*If you can stop taking tea and coffee, it is better. However, if you do want to take it, you are recommended not to take it more than a cup or two a day. Just like alcohol, caffeine can also be passed on to your milk if taken in high quantities. Caffeine is also not considered good for the health of your baby.
*Taking sweeteners like saccharin is very common when the mother is on a breastfeeding diet. However, it is important for you to understand that it can have some harmful long term side effects. Therefore, as a precautionary step, you had better sucralose (Splenda) – it is a safer substitute as calorie-free sugar.
*In order to minimize the exposure to mercury, you are also recommended to restrict the consumption of fish to 340g a week.
*Processed foods should also be avoided, especially those that contain a long list of additives.
*The consumption of peanuts is also not recommended, as it can leave traces of allergens in the breast milk.

Overall, as we can see there is no special breastfeeding diet. All you need to do is to focus on having a well-balanced diet. However, if you have some doubts and queries regarding your diet in the breastfeeding days, you are recommended to consult your doctor.

Please make sure that you get proper information about breastfeeding and consult your health care provider or lactation consultant to finalize your breastfeeding diet plan.http://www.pregnancy-period.com
