Madisonville, Louisiana is one of the oldest communities within the state of Louisiana and has many of the great things that Louisiana has to offer. If you’ve got younger children, there’s little doubt that you’re looking for some quick and easy Father’s Day crafts to do with your kids. Children absolutely love to give Dad something that they made themselves for Father’s Day… so here’s a really simple gift for Dad’s Day… a pencil holder.

Okay, I know that pencil holders aren’t really new, but Dad can always use one, they are really unique, and they can take on any type of personality or theme! Plus, they make a really quick and easy Father’s Day craft that kids can do themselves!

Here’s how to make one:

You’ll need to start with a clean can. I like to use the cardboard cans with a flip/pop up top that chow mein noodles and potato chips come in because they don’t have sharp edges, but you can also use any other kind of can you want. Make sure that your can isn’t sharp around the edges… wouldn’t want the kids to get hurt while decorating it or have Dad cut his finger when reaching in for a pencil!

Once you have the can, you can decorate it in a variety of ways… here are some ideas depending on the age and capability of your child:

1. Wrap the can with construction paper. Then you can decorate the paper with markers, crayons, stickers, foam pieces, etc.

2. Wrap the can with construction paper. Use pictures of your child or children to decorate the pencil holder.

3. Wrap the can with construction paper. Stamp the child’s handprints, footprints, or fingerprints on the paper.

4. Paint popsicle sticks and glue them around the can.

5. Gather sticks from outside. Cut or break them to the correct height of the can and hot glue them to the can to make a *green* project.

6. Glue different shapes of macaroni around the outside of the can. After the glue dries, spray paint the can Dad’s favorite color.

7. Wrap yarn around the can from top to bottom.

8. Glue on animal ears, nose, mouth, etc. to make Dad’s favorite animal into a pencil holder.

9. Glue felt or scraps of material onto the can to make any kind of design you want.

10. Glue shells, small pebbles, buttons, etc. to the can to make a *themed* pencil holder.

One other note… although I’ve given you lots of ideas about how you can decorate Dad’s pencil holder for Father’s Day, don’t forget that you can also decorate it according to a theme that means something to him. For example, you could make a pencil holder with a golf theme, fishing theme, sports theme, etc.

When you are on a cruise you are usually very safe. Most areas of the ship are well populated with people milling about, so there are rarely instances when you might find yourself on your own. Similarly, because there is a very close community of people, all of whom have paid a fair price to be there, you can be usually assured that you are in good company.

However, there are a few points worth mentioning to help ensure that you are safe, and not an unfortunate victim of either a petty crime or something more serious.

As far as your own personal safety is concerned, and that of any children travelling with you, if you are in any doubt then it is best not to wander the corridors between cabins on your own. Although statistically you are safer than anywhere else, particularly young children on their own are vulnerable as there are rarely any cameras, and during lovely days there are often few people around. Staying together, or going to your cabin during busier times can be a better choice.

Your cabin will of course be lockable, and it is easy to not bother locking it as you are on deck. However, it is a very sensible thing to get in the habit if always locking your cabin door when you are out, even if just for a short while. Almost certainly you will have your passport, money, credit cards, tickets, cameras, phones and other very valuable items in your cabin, and there are very few places to hide these items, so are easily located. Anyone who is of an unpleasant nature will know this, and it is a sad fact that sometimes theft does take place on cruise ships.

Make sure you aren’t one of the victims, and lock your door as a matter of habit every time you leave it. For the sake of a few seconds inconvenience, you will gain a great deal of peace of mind. If you have other occupants with you, such as children, make sure that if they ever visit the cabin without you, they are also aware of the importance of this routine.

Another aspect of safety worth considering is of course the railing around the outside of the ship. One of the joys of cruising is hanging over the railing looking at the waves, and even seeing dolphins swimming along side you. It hardly needs mentioning that leaning out too far, especially for children, carries with it obvious dangers. The railing is quite high and it would have to be a fairly determined or sheer madness to get close to falling, but it is always important to keep an eye on children, especially those with a tendency to fool about.

Another aspect of leaning over the railings is of course the potential risk of losing valuable items over the side. How many coins, glasses, wallets, keys, cards and other little essentials are now lodged firmly at the bottom of the world’s oceans? A countless number, certainly.

Always make sure that if you plan on looking over the side, your essential items are securely inside your pockets and can’t easily fall out. Particularly at risk are coat or jackets pockets which, should the breeze catch them, may flip upside down and promptly empty. Jacket pockets or trouser pockets that zip up are ideal. Even better is leaving the items back in your cabin.

There are a number of naval terms used when on a cruise, that can sometimes be a little confusing. Although this list is in no way complete, here are a few terms, and what they mean in plain language!

Aft: This is the back of the boat, or at least towards the rear end, where the propellers will be. If you are to meet someone or see something towards the aft of the ship, head to the back.

Berth: These are the beds which are built in to the cabins you sleep in. A cabin is usually described as being either single or twin berth, which simply means whether they have one or two beds. A twin berth cabin will have two beds, and will usually be larger than a single berth.

Bow: This is the front of the boat, and is a good place to get grand views of the ocean, or of the country you are approaching.

Disembark: This means to leave the ship. When you arrive at a port, the passengers will usually disembark, or get off the ship to have an explore around. During this time the ship’s staff will usually tidy the cabins and clean the ship ready for you to return. When you return to the ship and get back on, this is called embarking.

Leeward: This is a good place to be – it means that you are on the side of the ship which is away from the wind. The side which catches the wind is called the windward side, and the side which is sheltered is the leeward. Of course, as the wind changes and the ship turns, these sides may well change, but making sure you have booked your seat on the leeward side will ensure you have a sheltered place to enjoy the view.

Life Preserver: These can often be life jackets, which we’re more familiar with, but are not necessarily always jackets. They may also be vests, or even rings. Basically, a life preserver is any device which floats and is designed to help keep a person afloat in the water. There are always at least as many of these as there are passengers, so every passenger will have access to one of these.

Muster: This word means to come together as a group. It may sometimes be the case that for safety drills, or for other events, you are called to muster. This simply means that a group will meet together.

So if you are asked to muster on the leeward side towards the aft, you know you have to meet with your group on the sheltered side of the ship towards the back! You see, it’s not that difficult!

In truth, you’ll probably find that most modern cruise liners will not use this kind of terminology, and those people who do use these words are old traditionalists that like to show off their naval knowledge! However, there are times when these words might be used, and having some idea of what they mean may help to save you a little time and less fluster trying to work out where you need to go.

Very often a great deal of thought and planning goes into selecting which type of cabin to book when people select their choices for a cruise. Certainly selecting your cabin is one of the exciting parts of the planning process, and it is important to think carefully about your choices.

However, in reality people very rarely spend very much time in their cabin, and more often than not it is simply the place where people go to get changed into their outfits, and sleep. Other than that, most of the time will be spent on deck, or in the restaurant or facilities available.

There do seem to be an overwhelming range of choices when it comes to selecting a cabin, and for the first time cruiser it is hard to know where to start -almost all the rooms sound exquisite! Clearly those described as single cabins, twins or double berth cabins are the standard sort of rooms for either one or two people.

What many people are often surprised by is the relatively small space that these rooms occupy. They are in no way comparable to hotel rooms, and the amount of space you have available is much smaller than you would otherwise expect to have. But again, it is rare that anyone would really consider spending very much time in their cabin when you have the glorious views, decks, pools, cinemas, shops and other areas to enjoy on your trip.

A great deal of difference in price can be expected depending on a number of factors. Some rooms are classed as suites, or mini suites, and these have at least one adjoining room for leisure, a little like having a bedroom and living area. These are still relatively small, but more spacious than standard cabins and therefore very much more expensive. Unless you have a good reason for needing so much private space then this money is merely being spent for the sake of luxury.

Views are divided as far as a balcony is concerned. Having your cabin on the outside of the ship (rather than somewhere further towards the middle) can in some cases provide the rare opportunity of a private balcony. The beauty of these of course is to have your own guaranteed space to sit in comfort and admire the sea views. Again, the price will be dramatically increased for such an opportunity, and is considered luxury by most, although many would argue that this gives you the chance to live in the luxurious style associated with a cruise, and if you’re going to do it, do it properly.

One factor which not only affects price but can also have a dramatic effect on your enjoyment of the cruise is where the cabin is situated as far as distance from the centre. Those cabins further towards the rear or front of the ship will inevitably rock up and down more as the ship moves through the water, whereas cabins more in the middle of the ship will be more stable. If you are front to sea sickness at all, then this is well worth considering.

Sending flowers, candy and greeting cards are de rigueur for mom on Mother’s Day but, as members of the Sandwich Generation, you recognize that what your aging mother really wants on her special day is to feel nurtured.

So this Mother’s Day, make a commitment to do what you can to improve your relationship and give your mom and yourself positive memories. Here are six tips to help you get started.

1. The gift of time is one of the most precious presents that you can give your aging mother. Spend some quality time with her talking and reminiscing. Look through old family photographs and ask her to tell you stories about when she was a young girl. The time you spend with her now will sustain you both.

2. Make your mom feel more valued by concentrating just on her – plan a date with her for lunch or shopping. Let yourself become absorbed and delight in these pleasurable activities. Pay attention to the details. Talk about what you are doing, appreciating and enjoying. Linger awhile in order to make it last.

3. On some of your visits do a chore to ease her burden – go grocery shopping together, accompany her to the next doctor’s appointment, cook a delicious meal with enough left over for the next day.

4. The old fashioned art of letter writing can help you develop a closer bond. Write her a letter about how grateful you feel to have her as your mother. Sharing these feelings increases good memories about the past and leads to greater personal satisfaction for both of you.

5. If you have some old issues to work out with your mother, you may be able to move forward in addressing them by writing her an apology letter or a letter offering forgiveness. When you apologize, you free yourself from shame or guilt and your mother from dwelling on anger or resentment.

6. When you forgive your mother for some past transgression, it doesn’t necessarily excuse the action, but does free you from ruminating about it. Forgiveness releases you from the past; it is a gift that you give to yourself.

When Agnes was a teenager, she felt that her strong mother was trying to control her. She looked forward to getting out from under her thumb and moved far away when she married and raised her own family. As her children matured, so did Agnes. One of the confusing factors about alcohol and cruise holidays is that the ship will be moving from one country to another, and often the laws in each country will vary as far as age limits are concerned. Yet at sea, the ship’s own rules apply. This can mean that during the course of your cruise, if you are lucky enough to be 21 years old or younger, you may find that on some days you are able to buy and drink alcohol, whilst on other days you are not. This can all be very confusing, and it is important that, if you are aged between 18 and 21, you asked the stewards or other relevant staff what the current rules are, and if they are aware of any imminent changes to these.

Some cruise lines have a standard policy of no alcoholic consumption for anyone under 21 whilst on board. Of course, this can mean that when the ship docks at port, you can disembark and go off into the local town where you are free to drink. Of course, this can result in some cases of drinking to excess to take advantage of the opportunity. You need to be very careful about this, especially since the local drinks may be stronger than you are used to, the hot climate may have made you more dehydrated and therefore more susceptible to the effects of alcohol, and with a relaxed, carefree environment it is easy to drink for longer than you intended. All these points need to be borne in mind carefully, as you do not want to end up ruining your own holiday, and those of your fellow passengers.

Other cruise lines have a standard age limit of 18 which is easier to work with, although it is still important to bear in mind that when you arrive at a port the rules for that country will apply, and there will be instances when the age limit will have to be raised to 21 to comply with local restrictions. You will normally be given this information, but make sure you look out for this advice – the consequences of not heeding it and falling foul of local law are not to be considered!

Another issue as far as alcohol on board cruise ships is concerned is that you are not normally allowed to take your own drinks on board. If you do buy alcohol whilst stopping off at a port, once you return to the ship this will be taken from you and stored carefully until the end of the cruise when it will then be returned to you. The same is true for any alcoholic drinks you buy in the duty free shops which may be on board. You can certainly enjoy buying the cheap drinks, but they will not be made available to you until the end of your voyage.

There are occasional exceptions, perhaps a special celebration party or other event, and in this case prior approval must be obtained from the ship’s staff. Almost certainly they will only allow you to open your drinks if you pay a corkage fee, which is a price of between ten and fifteen dollars per bottle opened. Obviously the ship earns some of its money from the sale of drinks on board, and if everyone brought their own drinks with them this would represent a substantial loss, which is why this extra fee is charged.

Major holidays in America, boy, there are so many. Well, just thinking about it makes me smile. Christmas, probably the best holiday of the year in my opinion. Virtually every family sits around and eats and gives away presents. Everyone always seems so happy on this day as the kids are opening a gift they wanted all year, or the tech guy, like me, is opening the new favourite gadget, or, the grandmother is getting a brand new dress.

Christmas is a nationally recognized holiday each year on December 25th. While some Americans only celebrate this holiday as a time of giving, most Christian Americans will celebrate this as a time that Jesus Christ came as our saviour.

Another major holiday would have to be Thanksgiving. This is the day that citizens of the United States gather with their families for a time of great feasting. The traditional meal includes Turkey. With turkey you will usually find things like mashed potatoes, green beans, corn, and lots of dessert to go around afterwards! Thanksgiving is held each year on the fourth Thursday of November. This year, I will be eating plenty of Turkey on November 27th, 2008.

Oh boy, Independence Day, one of my favourites. Independence Day is a federal holiday in celebration of the United States Declaration of Independence in 1776 from Great Britain. This is probably one of the most important national holidays in existence although many people overlook it as just a time to party. Granted, partying is never a bad thing in my book.

By tradition, Americans will sit outside with kids with adult supervision play with fireworks, or, this is what I did when I was kid. Since this has obviously been seen as dangerous, causing injuries and lots of fires, people have decided it would be best to watch professionals do the work. My family will typically go to a local lake or college where pyrotechnic professionals put on huge displays for the public. There is nothing like watching a beautiful finally in a fireworks display.

Okay, you can not forget Halloween. Although Halloween is not celebrated by every family, most Christian families simply view this is a time to eat candy. If you have not figured it out yet, Americans love to eat! When I was a kid I remember going to a local neighbourhood where closes were close together so that we could quickly run from house to house, knock on the door.The custom is for them to give you a piece of candy to put in your bag. I still do this with my kids, but unfortunately I have to be selective on which houses and neighbourhoods we go to as some people feel the need to do stupid things into the candy. Each year, this holiday is held on October 31st. I look forward to getting my favourite this year, tootsie rolls!
