Run Your Car on a Quart Of Water

You can’t have failed to notice the rising gas prices. Even if you haven’t got a car you’ll have had your ear chewed off by all the people you get rides from about how expensive it is to run a car.

“These things don’t run on water, you know!” they say.

But they’re wrong!

These days, technological advances mean that is perfectly possible to do just that – run your car on water! And it’s not that difficult. Just a quart of water provides over 1800 gallons of HHO gas. That’s enough to run your car for months and months!

And not only that, running your car on hydropower i.e. water will

greatly improve the car’s fuel efficiency

reduce the emissions dramatically

save you a lot of money!

Thousands of people all over their world have converted their vehicles to hydropower. The technology is effective – it works! Some in the industry even think that hydropower will become standard for vehicles in the future – the NEAR future. Why wait when you can start earning money now?

Of course, it takes a well for automobile manufacturers to catch on to any good thing so you can get ahead of the game and for a very reasonable cost convert your own car to run on water.

Hydropower is very safe. People get scared by it because a little knowledge can be a dangerous thing; they find out that hydrogen is involved and they freak out. That’s a bit premature. In hydropower, the combustible gas is extracted only as needed and is burned steadily from the water, unlike in other technologies where larger amounts of combustible gases are burned.

Using water for power makes a lot of sense. You don’t have to go through the risky process of compressing highly flammable hydrogen into tanks when nature has done it for you. Hydrogen is naturally and safely compressed in water – without you having to do anything.

The procedure to convert your car to hydrogen is safe and simple. What’s more, if you want to sell your car on or return it at the end of a lease agreement, this technology is completely reversible. No warranties will be voided. Hydro Water power is an add-on to improve your car’s fuel efficiency.

The major oil companies don’t want you to know all this. Their profits depend upon it. But you can get ahead of the game. Convert your car to hydropower and you reduce your carbon footprint, help the environment – oh and you save money!

Proper Disposal Of Consumer Electronics Is Important

When you think about consumer electronics, you may think of equipment you use every day; like televisions, mobile phones and personal computers. What you may not even consider is that each year, the United States alone generates almost 3 million tons of commodity and electronic waste (or e-waste) through the disposal of damaged, defective and obsolete devices, such as that cordless phone that quit working for you or those mobile phones you threw away because you wanted the latest models. Let’s look at where that e-waste ends up after it’s tossed away and the effects it has on you and the environment.

Because of the difficulty and cost of recycling electronics, as well as spotty enforcement of legislation regarding e-waste exports, vast amounts of used electronics have been sent to countries such as China, Kenya and India. Lower environmental standards and working conditions make processing e-waste more profitable yet dangerously hazardous in those countries. Being mindful of e-waste disposal is a big concern. There are facilities out there that specifically deal with this hazardous material correctly.

When electronics are handled and sorted properly, e-waste is a valuable source of secondary raw materials. However, they are a major contributor of toxins and carcinogens when clumsily treated.

Fast paced technology changes, low initial cost and actual planned obsolescence have given way to a growing problem around the globe. Uncontrolled burning, disassembly without safety measures in place, and haphazard disposal practices are causing environmental and health problems.

Toxic and carcinogenic substances in waste from consumer electronics include lead, cadmium, mercury and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). When not handled properly, these substances can seep into soil where food is grown. They can be eaten or absorbed by animals in our food chain. Illegal burning of these electronics causes toxic fumes to be emitted, which are inhaled by animals and humans and depletes the ozone.

There are many ways in which these substance cause serious health risks. Lead, cadmium and mercury levels can build up in the body over time causing damage to the central nervous system, renal failure and cell damage. PCBs are known carcinogens.

Think about it the next time you indiscriminately throw away those cordless phone batteries or that camcorder that is older than your parents. Proper disposal through an e-waste recycler helps save our environment. With the potential for mercury, cadmium and lead leaching into the soil and contaminating the food chain, as well as PCB exposure causing cancer, some thoughtful consideration of use, reuse and disposal of consumer electronics is essential.

How to Promote Interest in Environmental Causes by Using Custom T Shirts

Corporations and individuals are doing more to protect the environment, but it is still not enough. The natural world is in a state of crisis that calls for action. If you are concerned about environmental causes, you can use custom T shirts to get people more interested.

One thing you will want to choose when designing a shirt for your earth-friendly cause is something with a prominent green color. The actual shirt could be green or the shirt could be another color with a large green emblem. This is important because the universal color of the environmental movement is green.

You might belong to a local group of ecologically-minded people. You can all get custom T shirts to wear to support your ideas. The focus might be on replacing fossil fuels with solar or wind energy. Your group might be concerned about clear-cutting of rainforests. Whatever the causes you wish to support, you can wear your shirts to show others how you feel about them.

You may be able to set up a design for anyone to use if you go to the right online shirt store. The message and picture could be of your own choosing. Then, you could advertise to direct individuals to the site to buy their own matching shirts to take part in the organization activity. Soon you would see your earth-friendly ideas being expressed all over town; and perhaps all over the world.

It is sometimes possible to get support from corporations with local offices. There are several ways companies can help. They can increase awareness by having a green week. For that week, employees will be asked to work on projects that help the cause. Anyone who completes their project could be given a shirt recognizing their accomplishments.

Corporations can also be given a chance to sell custom T shirts with an environmentally sound message. The corporations would foot the bill for the basic cost of the T shirt, and the employees could chip in an amount they choose to donate to the cause in order to buy the shirt. In this way, funds can be raised to do some activities such as building zero energy homes or researching alternative fuels for cars.

When corporations get in on the act, they can have a profound effect on individuals. They can encourage their employees to think about the world around them. Businesses can set up brainstorming sessions on how to clean up the land, streams, and air. If everyone is given a custom T shirt for their efforts, they will take more pride in the part they have played on the panels.

If you want to get the word out that everyone needs to think about the earth’s natural environment, you need tools to do it. A shirt can be such a tool. You can bring about a change in people’s attitudes and awareness when you share your designs and custom T shirts with them.

Indoor and Outdoor Lighting Tips to Conserve Energy and Save Money

Making improvements to your lighting is one of the fastest ways to cut your energy bills. An average household dedicates 11% of its energy budget to lighting. Using new lighting technologies can reduce lighting energy use in your home by 50% to 75%. Advances in lighting controls offer further energy savings by reducing the amount of time lights are on but not being used.

Indoor Lighting

Use tube fluorescent and energy efficient compact fluorescent lights (CFLs) in fixtures throughout your home to provide high-quality and high-efficiency lighting. Fluorescent lamps are much more efficient than incandescent (standard) bulbs and last about 4 to 10 times longer.

Today’s CFLs offer brightness and color rendition that is comparable to incandescent lights. Although fluorescent and compact fluorescent lamps cost a bit more than incandescent bulbs, they pay for themselves by saving energy over their lifetime. Now available are dimmable fluorescent light bulbs, which operate much like incandescent fixtures.

Indoor Lighting Tips

* Look for the ENERGY STAR label when purchasing these products.

* Turn off the lights in any room you’re not using, or consider installing timers, photo cells, or occupancy sensors to reduce the amount of time your lights are on.

* Use task lighting; instead of brightly lighting an entire room, focus the light where you need it. For example, use fluorescent under-cabinet lighting for kitchen sinks and countertops under cabinets.

* Consider three-way lamps; they make it easier to keep lighting levels low when brighter light is not necessary.

* Use 4-foot fluorescent fixtures with reflective backing and electronic ballasts for your workroom, garage, and laundry areas.

* Consider using 4-watt mini-fluorescent or electro-luminescent night lights. Both lights are much more efficient than their incandescent counterparts. The luminescent lights are cool to the touch.

* Use CFLs in all the portable table and floor lamps in your home. Consider carefully the size and fit of these systems when you select them. Some home fixtures may not accommodate some of the larger CFLs.

* Recessed downlights (also called recessed cans) are now available that are rated for contact with insulation (IC rated), are designed specifically for pin-based CFLs, and can be used in retrofits or new construction.

* Take advantage of daylight by using light-colored, loose-weave curtains on your windows to allow daylight to penetrate the room while preserving privacy. Also, decorate with lighter colors that reflect daylight.

* If you have torchiere fixtures with halogen lamps, consider replacing them with compact fluorescent torchieres. Compact fluorescent torchieres use 60% to 80% less energy, can produce more light (lumens), and do not get as hot as the halogen torchieres. Halogen torchieres are a fire risk because of the high temperature of the halogen bulb.

Outdoor Lighting

Many homeowners use outdoor lighting for decoration and security. When shopping for outdoor lights, you will find a variety of products, from low-voltage pathway lighting to fluorescent motion-detector floodlights. Some stores also carry lights powered by small photovoltaic (PV) modules that convert sunlight directly into electricity; consider PV-powered lights for areas that are not close to an existing power supply line.

Outdoor Lighting Tips

* Use outdoor lights with a photocell unit or a motion sensor so they will turn on only at night or when someone is present. A combined photocell and motion sensor will increase your energy savings even more.

* Turn off decorative outdoor natural gas lamps; just eight such lamps burning year-round use as much natural gas as it takes to heat an average-size home during an entire winter.

* Exterior lighting is one of the best places to use CFLs because of their long life. If you live in a cold climate, be sure to buy a lamp with a cold weather ballast since standard CFLs may not work well below 40 degrees F.

* Also consider high-intensity discharge (also called HID) or low-pressure sodium lights.

By implementing some of these tips and strategies, you will save both energy and money. In many cases your home will also be safer due to the decreased fire hazards.

Sick of replacing light bulbs and paying high energy bills? Switch to compact fluorescent lighting and you won’t ever go back.

5 Ways Fluorescent Lighting Saves Energy and the Environment

Saving energy helps the environment because most energy sources, such as coal and natural gas are non-renewable. This means that once used, they are gone forever. Additionally, most forms of energy cause pollution that can be a source of greenhouse gases leading to climate change.

A simple explanation of how fluorescent bulbs work will illustrate 5 examples of how using fluorescent bulbs will help us save energy and the environment.

How Fluorescent Light Bulbs Work

Fluorescent lighting is manufactured by enclosing gas within glass tubes. Electricity excites the gas, producing light when the gas fluoresces. The fluorescent reaction produces ultraviolet light that is invisible to the human eye. Visible light is created when the UV light subsequently reacts with mercury and phosphorescent chemicals that have also been enclosed in the tube.

Fluorescent light bulbs are available to fit most existing fixtures and offer one of the most energy efficient electric lighting solutions available today.

Here are 5 examples of how fluorescents help save energy and the environment:

1. A greater proportion of the electricity consumed is directly used to produce light, resulting in conservation of energy sources and reduced pollution.

2. Fluorescent lights run cooler than incandescent and so they reduce the costs associated with running air conditioning.

3. The longer life of fluorescents will reduce the number of used bulbs in landfills, particularly since it has been shown that most people will properly recycle fluorescent bulbs when given the opportunity.

4. The EPA estimates that most of the 104 metric tons of mercury introduced into the atmosphere each year by humans is released by coal fired electric plants. Fluorescent light bulbs emit no mercury unless broken or improperly disposed of. Additionally, manufacturers are developing bulbs that operate with much less mercury than older bulbs.

5. Assuming that the lower costs of operating fluorescents will not increase the perceived need for light, consumers should use less electricity if they convert to fluorescent lighting when appropriate.

Just based on these facts alone, we can see that converting to a fluorescent lighting society is best for everyone. Businesses and consumers will both save money and energy, benefiting not only the environment, but also the budget.

It may be too late to completely avoid problems like global warming, but there is no need to abuse electricity and energy. Anything that we can do to decrease landfill waste is also a huge plus, as we are slowly running out of room to dump our garbage. Simply by switching from incandescent and halogen lighting to fluorescent lighting, you are doing your part to help the Earth.

Recycling Plastic Makes Economic and Environmental Sense

Plastics products are ubiquitous throughout the world. As dependency upon these light weight and durable products increased, so too has the need for global innovation in recycling technologies. Over the decades recycling companies developed a variety of processes to turn discarded plastics into hundreds of products from paint brushes to rugs and pillows, boat hulls and railroad ties.

Calling the Consumer
The greatest challenge to recycling manufacturers is educating and engaging the public. About 75 percent of Americans recycle newspaper and cardboard while little more than 25 percent recycle plastic. Industry analysts think this low response rate might be due to a lack of understanding about the coding on recyclable plastics – the small triangle with a number in the center – that identifies what kind of plastic an item is.

The most frequently recycled plastics of the seven groups of polymer plastics are PET 01,used in soft drink bottles and smaller jars; PE-HD 02, a harder and more durable plastic used in milks bottles and large trash bags; and PE-LD 04 that’s tough yet flexible and used in frozen food bags, flexible container lids and squeeze bottles.

Although the recycling rate of these and other products is not yet impressive, the numbers have been steadily rising since 1990. In 2006, about 2.2 billion pounds of PET plastic bottles were recycled and 928 million pounds of HDPE (High Density Polyethylene) containers made it to recyclers.

Innovating PET Production
As awareness of the environmental damage done by polymers increased, so too did the urgency to encourage recycling. At the same time, experimentation with processing and application rose. For example, according to a CNN report, a Ph.D. in India, Dr. S. Madhu, included shredded and melted plastic in a roadway surfacing mix. Working for the Kerala Highway Research Institute, Madhu mixed the plastic with aggregate and bitumen to create a surface that withstands the pounding of annual monsoon seasons.

Working in a highly regulated environment, conventional recycling manufacturers focus on producing a long list of common products. Although processes vary, they generally follow a common methodology. First, plastics are sorted according to their PET identification number. This is often done before the recycled products reach the manufacturer. The “dirty” PET containers are also cleaned of labels, glue and other residual materials. A dirty regrind of the PET then goes to re-claimers who process the material into a form that can be used by manufacturers. Re-claimers further clean the materials of contaminants and materials that are lighter than the plastic. The final flakes of PET are washed with a special detergent that gets rid of glues, food or dirt.

Next, the PET materials are further treated with processes that separate the heavier PET particles from the lighter ones – this is called the float-sink stage. The plastics are then dried and ready to become new products in the hands of manufacturers throughout the world.

But, new methods are constantly being developed to recycle PET products, including a de-polymerization process that “reverses” the chemical process used to make the polymer. There are pilot projects using this method, as well as other innovative processes to make plastic recycling more environmentally friendly and economical.

Demand for Recycled Products
The importance of recycled PET and HDPE cannot be ignored. The latter, heavier PET is used to make building materials that become backyard decks that last longer than wood; it becomes lawn furniture, trash cans, office products, buckets, safety cones and much more. HDPE can also be used to manufacture above and below ground water storage tanks that withstand decades of use.

Of five major classes of PET plastics, the most high-end use is to manufacture new PET bottles and containers. Other classes include plastic sheeting or plastic that’s used for molding small items such as scoops for laundry detergent; strapping materials for packaging and transportation; resins that are used in molds for automobile components; and material that’s combined to make fibers for carpeting, fabrics and fiber fillings.

Recycled PET can show up in unexpected places such as business cards, sleeping bags, baseball caps and the welcome mat at your front door.

In the Hands of the Consumer
Ultimately, it’s all up to the consumer. Awareness of the environmental benefits of recycling plastic and the viability of manufacturing with recycled PET can mitigate environmental damage and support a global industry that returns economical and useful products to the marketplace.

In the U.S., many municipal governments have made it easier for consumers to recycle plastic. Cities accept all plastic products with the recycle symbol and do the sorting themselves before shipping off for further processing. The consumer doesn’t have to deal with separating PET numbers or peeling off labels. Many states have passed legislation commonly known as “bottle bills” that charge a small fee for plastic containers. There is greater value to the consumer to recycle when there is the incentive of a redemption value. Some communities have “drop off” recycling centers and others have “buy back” centers that pay consumers for recyclable materials.

Whatever the method of recycling or the process that recreates value from discarded PET products, it’s clear that the public, governments and industry share a financial and environmental stake in the practice of plastic recycling.

The Theory Behind Mountain Formation

Climate determines how fast or slowly rocks will erode. Climatic conditions control the rate of weathering that takes place by regulating the catalysts of moisture and temperature.

Experimentation has discovered that tropical weathering rates, where temperature and moisture are at their maximum, are three and a half times higher than rates in temperate environments. Climate was warm, and a carbonate bank flourished in the NYC area.

Continental rims, when they are stretched to their limits, may refuse to break. They may slip back and jar deep coastal trenches. Continuing on around to the east side of the park, the trail passes through a valley. Along the trail about half way to the pond, you may start to see dark brown potato-shaped stones in the trail.

Plate tectonics offers a simple explanation that works well for most of the geological features it intends to explain and so it was widely accepted by the scientific community. However, there are problems with the theory. Plates consist not only of the crust, but about 150 kilometers of the underlying mantle as well. Collectively the crust and associated mantle are termed the lithosphere .

Rocks within the Table Rock Thrust Sheet are locally overturned and were isoclinally folded before emplacement. Rock samples were taken after chipping back several inches from the exposed surfaces of rocks which had no obvious seams or cracks, and were collected directly into plastic bags, every precaution being taken to prevent contamination. Sediment washed from the western mountains accumulated on top of the Morrison and later became the Cedar Mountain Formation. Dinosaurs roamed this environment, but the types of dinosaurs had changed. Sediment rapidly covered the deposit, protecting the bones from decay. Lithification followed, encasing the bones in solid rock.

Individual conglomerate beds are often capped by mega-rippled surfaces that display a unidirectional asymmetry indicating transport to the south. We interpret this sedimentary structure as the record of fair-weather waves impinging on the shoreface.

Individuals invited to participate in symposia may present an additional volunteered paper. Depending on time constraints in oral sessions, some submitters may be requested to switch to a poster presentation and vice-versa.

Mountains make up a quarter of the world’s landscape and are home to at least 12 per cent of the world’s people. A further 14 per cent live adjacent or very close to mountain areas. Mountains, rich in streams and little Alpine lakes, provide food and security for unusual water birds such as the Ruddy Shelduck and the tall elegant Wattled Crane.

Many European ducks and waders pass the dry season in the mountains, before returning to Europe, as do several birds of prey such as the Steppe Eagle and Kestrel.

Small Towns With Big Water Damage

Unless you happen to be one of the residents of many of the small towns along the Mississippi river that was flooded drastically in the past few months, it might be impossible to truly understand the scope of the damage that was incurred. These people had their whole lives literally brought to a stand still when so many smaller levees were breeched because they were simply unable to hold back the overflow of the river.

The largest cities along the mighty Mississippi were largely spared from the ravishment of the flood water because they had levees that were more substantial and designed to hold back higher levels of water, therefore causing less overall damage. What a bigger mess things could have been if these big city levees had been breeched on a larger scale as well. You probably can not tell the smaller towns that there was any luck at all involved since they are the ones who suffered the brunt of the disaster.

Just exactly how long will it take all of these small towns to recover emotionally as well as financially? This will be hard to determine. Many of the towns were flooded in the most active and business laden areas. For many small business owners in these areas, their livelihood stopped as they waited for the water to come and then to recede. For the insured, it will only be a matter of time until they can be back up and running. For those who might not have had any insurance coverage for their business, it could mean the end of them

Homeowners in these areas are probably still amazed at the event. So many were made to evacuate their homes and stay somewhere that was deemed safe while the flooding was going on. Not knowing what they could expect to find when they were finally allowed to return home, you can not imagine the terror they probably had to go through. Once again, those that were insured for flooding might have had a less traumatic ordeal knowing that help would be there for them at the end of it all, and once again, not so for the uninsured home owner.

Whether they were insured or not, it is likely to take many months to several years for all of the residents and businesses to return to some semblance of normalcy in these flooded small towns. It takes a while to clean up, move back in, and start all over again anytime a disaster of this magnitude occurs. We can only hope that another such flooding event does to happen in these areas anytime soon to hamper their reconstruction process.

Could Packaging Machinery Soon Be Obsolete

You don’t have to go that far back in time to come across a time when local grocer’s shops would package everything up in brown paper bags for us to take home. Shopping was a pleasure that came with a personal touch. We weren’t inundated with a plethora of plastic bags, plastic and polystyrene packaging and reams of cling film with no environmentally friendly way of disposing of them. Even people did become slightly more aware of environmental concerns it was then decided we shouldn’t chop down trees for paper bags, but use this other rubbish instead.

Better communication systems and more choices in travel meant that people were spread further and further across the country. On top of that the population was growing at an alarming rate. This gave birth to the necessity for larger shops and more mass produced food that could be harvested, prepared and onto the shop shelves in as short a time as possible. It was also necessary to find a way of storing the food for longer, preventing contamination and making it last longer.

Of course, this would have been done originally in a factory by workers but at the end of the day, it simply wasn’t a quick enough method and packaging machinery was called for. Machines were built that could prepare food and package it in a much more clinical and hygienic way, thus leading to less contamination but at the same time, fewer jobs as not so many people were needed to run these machines.

As time has gone by, packaging machinery has required less and less input other than the initial set up. Now, most packaging machinery comes equipped with its own on-board computer and after a few minutes programming by one person, it is set to run through more food preparation and packaging in one day than one person could carry out in a month. This has meant more job losses.

On top of this, we now understand more about the environmental impact that this non-recyclable packaging has on the environment. Landfill sites full of food packaging that takes forever to rot away are having a detrimental effect on the very air that we breathe.

Dyes in the printing on the packaging are also causing problems. Some of this packaging is shipped to other countries for an attempt at recycling but the material has to be washed and stripped of its dye first. This then runs into the local water system causing further pollution but sending the problem to a different area is just no good.

So, are we looking at a time that will see us going back to the days when food was packaged in brown paper? I, for one, hope so. The Americans have the right idea. Their groceries are packed in strong, recyclable paper bags. Not only are these good for our planet but have you seen someone carry them? Without handles, you have no choice but to carry the bulk of the weight in front of you in your arms. This is the correct way to carry a heavy weight.

Many a time I have seen women struggling back from shops with heavy plastic bags at their sides, pulling them down to a stooping posture and cutting into the hands. This is bad for the hand and arm joints, it is bad for the shoulders, back and neck and can cause lasting damage. A sensible bag that can be carried in the correct way and would not be harmful when disposed of has to be so much better than ruining our bodies and environment with this plastic rubbish. Even if it does mean the loss of packaging machinery.

Environmental expert Catherine Harvey looks at the way packaging machinery will be needed less and less in future.
