Your car’s engine is essentially a great big air pump. The more air that can be sucked into the motor and mixed with gasoline, then the more power it can make through combustion.

When you browse through the catalog at your local speed shop, you’ll see a variety of different performance parts which are designed to help improve the amount of air that flows into an engine: cold air intakes, ram air induction, turbochargers and superchargers, etc. However, the one modification that you can make to your import’s air flow that also provides some of the best bang for your buck is nitrous oxide injection.

Nitrous oxide has acquired somewhat of a mythical status in the compact car performance scene thanks to its idolization in the media and in the movies. We are all familiar with the scene where our hero pushes the little red button on his steering wheel and wins the race. But how does this gas really work? Essentially, when nitrous oxide or N20 is introduced into a vehicles intake, the heat of the engine causes it to it break down into its component gases nitrogen and oxygen. Since nitrous oxide is an extremely dense gas, there is a significantly larger amount of oxygen locked up inside of it in comparison to that which is found in the atmosphere. This drastically increases the amount of oxygen available for combustion, and as a result, the amount of horsepower that can be produced also goes up. In small displacement, 4-cylinder motor, nitrous oxide can be a great equalizer when it comes to performance.

There are a few different ways you can inject nitrous oxide into your engine. The cheapest and least complicated method is to use what is called a dry kit. A dry kit sprays the gas into your cars intake and then convinces the engine to add more fuel to the mix. If you go this route, it is extremely important that your cylinders be provided with enough fuel to deal with the extra oxygen, or you might be looking at an expensive paperweight when you pop your hood at the end of a run.
This is why many people opt for a wet kit, which uses an extra fuel injector to spray a mixture of nitrous oxide and fuel into the intake.

This method helps to ensure that the correct mixture will be maintained in the engine, but it can also lead to fuel puddling in the intake – where it could ignite and cause an explosion. Sound scary? It is, and thats why you want to make sure that your nitrous kit is installed by a professional.

The most expensive form of nitrous oxide injection, and also the safest and best method when it comes to producing maximum power, is called direct port injection. In this version, fuel and N20 are introduced into each individual cylinder, providing a much more direct mixture control.

Nitrous oxide is not an always-on type of modification as it should only be used when the vehicle is under wide open throttle and you might not like the fact that your extra power is limited by how much gas you’ve got left in the bottle. That being said, with kits that offer 200 additional horsepower or more, it is hard to deny the appeal of this piece of bolt-on performance equipment.

With fuel prices rising, road tax on the increase and the astronomical cost of living continually emptying the nation’s transport funds – why aren’t people using public transport more? Convenience, cost and efficiency are just three of the reasons that so many people opt to stay in their cars, when they should be the reasons to jump on the train or bus.

For the most convenient form of transport, most people will say that driving alone in your own car cannot be beaten. However, there will be times when this is not the case and public transport will be more suitable. Living in London means that the tube can often be the best way to get from A to B and in the quickest possible time.

For those living outside of the big cities and even larger towns the case is more often than not that public transport isn’t frequent enough and costs too much. Depending entirely on where you live and where you need to go to, it can rarely be argued that public transport is the better option. A forty minute drive to work for me costs twice as much and takes three times as long on the train. So why would I ever consider not driving for this journey?

Convenience is regularly the first thing that commuters will look for when deciding which mode of transport to use. With this in mind, it would seem that there needs to be a major shake-up before people in more rural areas opt to jump on a bus or train rather than drive themselves to work and back.

The cost of petrol (and diesel), road tax and car maintenance continues to rise as the credit crunch is felt across the country. As the nation begins tightening its belts a little further, cost of commuting to work will play an even more important role in choice of transport method.

Driving into London can be expensive, with congestion charges and road tax added to the already hefty fuel costs and car insurance. Commuting to London by train seems to be the sensible option with the tube offering a pretty good service for getting around central London quickly and easily. But this cannot be said for so many other towns around the UK where bus and services are often infrequent and require multiple changes.

So, for those of us that don’t work in London and will not consider car insurance as part of the cost of getting from A to B, is the cost of driving really as expensive as we are told? Fuel prices have shot up dramatically in the last year, rising by about 30 per cent all over the country. Even then, I am still saving a substantial amount of money every week by driving to work despite the protestations of the government who keep trying to persuade us to opt for public transport.

I drive alternate weeks with a work colleague and we halve our fuel consumption as well as sneaking forty winks when it’s own turn to be the passenger. Car share schemes seem to be popular amongst drivers for these reasons, as they still offer convenience, value and for those green-thinkers among us is a little better for the environment.

If you drive to work then this is a fantastic option for driving down fuel costs, while doing a little bit for the environment. Another choice for drivers is to avoid busy town centre traffic and the problems of parking by jumping on the park-and-ride service that is sometimes provided. By parking just outside of the town centre, you can pay a small fee and park for the whole day with only the small inconvenience of a short bus ride. A fantastic choice if a parking space is both costly and a rare commodity.

As a regular driver I find travelling by train or bus to be both inconvenient and a little too expensive to tempt me to hang up my keys. But with the cost of fuel rising every week I have been tempted to at least consider the possibility of not driving so often, as well as driving with more efficient fuel consumption in mind.

If fuel prices continue to rise as expected, public transport may become a more viable option as cost plays a bigger role than convenience or efficiency. So, if the nation decides to ‘go public’, will the public transport system be ready for the increase in popularity? Judging by the numbers of standing passengers commuting to London, it would appear to be very doubtful at best.

All about Suzuki Motorcycles

Suzuki Motor Company was founded by Michio Suzuki. He had a very successful looming business when he decided to invest in the concept of motorcycle manufacturing in 1920. Suzuki didn’t take the motorcycle world by storm, in stead it was a slow and steady rise to success. There were a variety of motorcycle models that had moderate success. People began to take notice of the Suzuki line of motorcycles after their Diamond Free model won the Mount Fuji Hill Climb in 1953.

In June of 1954, Suzuki implemented their trademark ‘S’ logo that is still used today. They also put their years of observing the motorcycle industry to good use. 1962 saw them as the winner of the Grand Prix World Championship. Suzuki decided to begin selling its motorcycles in the United States in 1963. They have come a long way since that first introduction. Suzuki introduced the X-6 Hustler in 1966, becoming their first street legal performance bike. At the time, it was also the fastest 250CC on the market. They followed the success of it with a 500CC model called The Titan. In 1969 Suzuki took the world by surprise when it introduced the GT750. This was a two stroke motorcycle that could reach a speed of 110 miles per hour. It was able to accelerate from zero to sixty in only five seconds. Since this motorcycle was so well received, Suzuki decided to make a larger bike with the same type of power. The RG500 became the most successful racing bike of that era.

Suzuki continued to dominate the motocross racing circuit in the 1970′s, winning the World Motocross Championship in 1971, 1972, 1973, 1975, and 1976. Due to tighter emission regulations, Suzuki had some stumbling blocks in 1976. However, they were successfully able to redesign their four stroke models to meet these regulations. They models also sold very well.

Suzuki again makes racing history with the introduction of the XN85 in 1982. This was a turbo charged motorcycle that won many high profile races. The first American to win the World Motocross Championship did so in 1982 on this bike. In 1986 they offered the GSX-R, also a turbo charged racer bike.
