Moving On from Breast

Breastfeeding is often recommended for the first 6 months. As i need to get back to work, bottle feeding would be the best option and i went from breast to bottle when Abby was 2 months. It does not mean that you stop giving breast milk as you can pump it out nd bottle it .It wasnt easy ;but here are some tips:

1) Start early. This will ease the transition from breast to bottle for baby.Six weeks would be the best as babies will not be able to identify the difference between your nipple or bottle teat.

2) Practice gradual transition from breast to bottle as it will create stress to the baby if the breast is eliminated suddenly.

3) Make bottle feeding a fun time .Tickle, sing or make funny faces to relax your baby.Do not scare your baby when feeding with bottle.

4) Have someone else feed the bottle as your baby can still smell you and associate it with breastfeeding.

5) Devote your time and have patience in weaning your baby off the breast.

Constipation is common for babies especially when they start weaning at 6 months.

Here are some tips to avoid constipation:

1)Nutrition

Fibers via fruits and vegetables, prune juice, whole grains and apple juice and lots fluid/water

2)Practice these steps:

a. Breast feed your baby as it breastmilk is high in whey and easily digested.Breastfed babies seldom get constipated

b. Feed the proper food after weaning.Ensure that the diet is filled with fibre, whole grains, juices, lots liquids.Avoid junk food, high sugared food eg chocolates.

c. Increase fluid intake or frequent intake of sufficient fluid.

d. Fill your baby’s day with lots activities and movement as it encourages bowel movement too.
